Tourism experts offer workshop

Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks and Tourism staff will come to Oberlin on Tuesday for workshops on how to improve marketing skills and promote towns as part of the department’s 2016 Tourism Roadshow.

In Oberlin, the event is scheduled to start at 9 a.m., with registration at 8:30. The roundtable-style discussions are scheduled to go until noon. The department is sending eight tourism experts to answer questions on how the state tourism office can help tourism agencies promote their towns.

The department staff will also talk about the new 2017 co-op opportunities, where the state will help with website building and maintenance as well as listing information online.

As of last week, an email from the state said 20 people had registered to attend, and the number is expected to increase.

Economic Development Director Shayla Williby said the goal is to show people additional ways to market and advertise for tourism.

The Oberlin Convention and Visitors Bureau will provide breakfast, cinnamon rolls, tea and coffee. Before it learned the event would not be going after lunch, the bureau board was thinking on using Subway to cater, but the department said it was not necessary.

The department staff will arrive Monday night, then have dinner at one of the restaurants in town. The next day, after the workshops, the staff will have lunch and then explore Oberlin.

From Wednesday to Friday, the Roadshow will go to Tipton, Marysville and Leavenworth.

This is a free event, open to all the public, Mrs. Williby said, and the only requirement is to register before Tuesday so that the sponsors can have an estimate of people coming. They can register online at
